"Avatar" makes people depressed and gives them suicidal thoughts
Wow, this takes crazy to a whole new level:
(CNN) -- James Cameron's completely immersive spectacle "Avatar" may have been a little too real for some fans who say they have experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora.
On the fan forum site "Avatar Forums," a topic thread entitled "Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible," has received more than 1,000 posts from people experiencing depression and fans trying to help them cope. The topic became so popular last month that forum administrator Philippe Baghdassarian had to create a second thread so people could continue to post their confused feelings about the movie.
"I wasn't depressed myself. In fact the movie made me happy ," Baghdassarian said. "But I can understand why it made people depressed. The movie was so beautiful and it showed something we don't have here on Earth. I think people saw we could be living in a completely different world and that caused them to be depressed."

I can see why... White guilt
I can see why...
White guilt is depressing and we'll do anything to avoid it...including accepting carbon rights.
All of these types of movies are depressing.
White Guilt only happens when you surround yourself with
Welfarist Media, Welfarist Individuals, or if you take College Courses.
Stay away from them and you'll be fine.
"Guilt" is self-caused and self-aflicted.
All that being said I'm not going to feel sorry for white people in America -- if, you force me to think in groupist terms.
The aliens in Avatar are "aliens" -- therefore there's no "white vs minority" issue -- It's Corporatists vs Indigenous.
The aliens also "rise-up," they stop feeling sorry for themselves and are not seeking "equality" -- they seek dominance; which is what you are supposed to do as individualists (even when you live as a tribe or clan).
The Africans who fought and died and were never taken off the continent never became slaves.
The Africans who were slaves, got fed up, and died fighting were no longer slaves.
The Africans that escaped and freed-themselves were no longer slaves.
The Africans who helped other Africans to freedom were "Warriors"
Now take out the word "Africans" and replace it with "Individuals"
Go For It!!!!!

I'm usually more sensitive
to people's "issues", but whoever is being affected by this was on the edge already and it was more a matter of what would send them over.
Now, if you put up a bill board light show that made people throw up, I'd be all that petition asking you to change it because those people weren't going to throw up no matter what.
We can have what the Nav'i had here on Earth
We might not look like the Nav’i, but the field of “Permaculture” can set us in the right direction.
With a mix between Permaculture and Free Market Economics, creative destruction through efficient technological revolutions for sustainable agriculture we could create the same open system the Nav’I flourish in. however the rate at which society would change for me seems unpredictable so I am not sure if there would be a physiological difference.
The role of a farmer, in Fukuoka's mind, is an observer, not an intervener, of the natural order in his/her particular landscape. How is that any different than Hayek in regards to Economics?
It is sad that people (and movie makers)
are so drawn to pretty fantasies that can't be realized; but our own earth could be sustainably nurturing and peaceful using the insights of Permaculture, Free Markets, and a solid ethic of peace and freedom for all.
No We Can't.
Free market economics is not going to give people, animals, and trees the ability to be connected in some quasi-sexual relationship.
I’m not sure I remember seeing the Nav’I have sex with trees.
But yes free markets would mean competitive education over costs efficiency which means students would consistently become driven to minimize costs which equates to sustainability. Permaculture is the ultimate sustainable methodology and would be the epitome of a free market education.
Permaculture is exactly what the Nav’i practiced… of course James Cameron pressed fast forward and sent a free market into millions of years of evolution.
What many people don’t realize is that a free market is an open economic system that mirrors those seen in open ecosystems.

the nav'i have not
the nav'i have not flourished.. it is make believe, it is
a figment of one mans imagination. It never happened.

I am not saying the Nav’i is real
. I am saying that with the right direction our society can experience the same connection to nature as the Nav’I did in their fictional world. I could care less whether or not it is real or not because that wasn’t my point, I don’t even typically like fiction. But I know permaculture is a practice that is closer than people think to what the Nav’I had in their fictional world.

if you do not have that
if you do not have that direction now, why would it change in the future?

well that's easy
each individual has to make that realization before we head in the right direction as a whole. But as individuals we can still witness that change by making the difference in our own lives

Fantasy can do that...
As a child, I used to be a little down when I would finish a really good science fiction book. The world the author would create (in conjunction with my vivid imagination) was often much more vibrant and interesting than my mundane reality.
Movie producers are just now beginning to catch up through the use of their cutting edge CGI tools.
But I also think that the subliminal message of this particular film is depressing because it is so relentlessly misanthropic. "Avatar" pretty much rubs the average tree-hugger's nose in his own self-loathing philosophy. After all, since we are all responsible for the destruction of the pantheistic Eden and noble savages that supposedly inhabited Mother Earth, why shouldn't we all hate ourselves?

You need them to see the 3D. It wasn't just a joke the theater owners played on us. I checked.

For Freedom!
Bummed that it ended so soon
Said a friend of mine that saw it Saturday.
He enjoyed it so much, that the fact that it ended was the only letdown. Does that count?

This thread has really helped me -- I was feeling a bit "blue"
earlier when I realized I'm not tall enough or blue enough and that I really wanted to control a remote body on a gaseous planet and run around like 10 foot tall elf-americans -- shooting bows and arrows.

Yeah- I read that review lol
It seemed kinda quasi-newsy to me...like a paid advertorial made to look like a news story. "This movies is sooooo cutting edge and gorgeous that people with borderline psychoses are feeling depressed that they cant LIVE in it". "Wow-I'm pretty well- adjusted- Id better go see this movie...in 3D!" It reminds me of the radio spots for the slasher movies in the late 70's early 80's where the guy presumably from the motion picture police comes on the top 40 radio stations after the ad and says "No one will be admitted into the theatre during the cellar chainsaw scene". lol My first impression was that CNN's Entertainment Dept is whoring out ad space.
ummmm......
give me a frikkin break......
