Unschooling: No Tests, No Books, No Bedtime (ABC News)

.

I plan on home schooling my kids.

I'm not sure what to think about the unschooling method. I probably agree with some aspects and some I don't - but this news report ABC News did on this family irks me to no end.

Be sure to click on the video.

Good news... The MSM failed at stopping Home Schooling

And they are now failing also at stopping the 2012 Ron Paul REVOLUTION.

They have no credibility on home schooling.

They have no credibility on Ron Paul, the constitution, bill of rights or declaration of independence.

Their MSM positions are well known to be tied to the opposition of corporate special interests.

They will loose.

The dinosaur media is already dead.

People will watch them just like they watch professional wrestling; not knowing the outcome for sure but knowing that it has already been determined before the fight even begins.

Ron Paul is the only candidate steppin into the ring that is not on the take. He means to win.

I didin't watch the video,

but I read up on unschooling in the early 80's when my kids were babies and toddlers. Unschooling is okay for very young children, but there is plenty that kids must learn whether they like it or not. I home schooled mine all the way through and can say that being flexible and knowing your child when home schooling is not the same thing as unschooling.

We homeschool/unschool

my son is 6 and his intelligence appetite is voracious.
We cover what he wants for now.........that will change.
But a topic of interest in our homeschool group today is that the military does not accept homeschool grads anymore without college credits. It seems many dropouts are claiming to be homeschooled and now the military is asking for more credentials than a ged. Fine with me, my son will never volunteer for military duty.Um, I mean I won't let him. But the fine homeschooled children who choose military careers are at a loss.........

seriously?

"the military does not accept homeschool grads anymore without college credits." seriously?!

Hasn't the military been pretty consistently LOWERING the bar regarding education requirements?

That's incredible because more and more Ivy Leagues are accepting homeschoolers.

Infact, I heard that several colleges/universities here in our state have created a "scholarship cap for homeschoolers" because homeschoolers were winning all the scholarships and it didn't seem fair to the other folks!

I homeschooled my two kids and

cooperated in activities and some classes with a large group of homeschoolers including very curriculum-guided families and unschoolers, and all in between.

For my family it worked to avoid a rigid curriculum, but to introduce as rich a variety as possible of subjects, offer abundant resources, make learning as interesting and fun as possible of course, but following the lead of each child. In the long run, fostering independence and good ethics are the most important qualities to pass along to children.

Both of mine are successful in their chosen fields, my son running a 70-person company at age 26 with no formal schooling or college. My daughter, for social reasons, attended high school but only found one teacher truly worthwhile. A voracious reader and researcher, she considers herself a lifelong autodidact, is a focused hard worker, and is doing well in her very competitive artistic profession at age 20.

I almost cheered when........

.

....the older kid was asked about what time he goes to bed/gets up.....his response to the digusted reporter was, "I get the same amount of sleep".

LOVED it.

wait....you are going to trust ABC to portray this fairly?

I'm homeschooling too. While unschooling isn't for my family it DOES work depending upon the situation. As you research homeschooling more, you will find that there are many methods and styles that you have never heard of before.

Here is a GREAT little film about homeschooling. Many people are practicing unschooling with excellent results.

(I have no idea about the actual website...just watch the film.)

Just do whatever works for your family. Good Luck!!!

How do state govts feel about so-called "un-schooling"?

Do you have to live in a state that not restrictive on how their progress gets reported?

.

it depends upon your school district

and how you word your compliance requirements report. We don't unschool. But many of my kids homeschool buddies are unschooled.

We homeschool our children..

I wouldn't have it any other way, even if I could afford to. I have to correct the History books I use myself, too many publishers don't know the difference between a Republic and a Democracy. Can anyone here help with that?

Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout all the land to all its inhabitants! Leviticus 20:5

Forget mainstream..

We homeschool our 3 kids (my wife does 98% of it). She uses mostly Oak Meadow.

I can't speak to unschooling - but if you go that way, make sure you know what you're getting into.

Here's a real story you'll appreciate, our oldest son was resisting the reading lessons, so my wife - in her wisdom, decided to skip that part of the curriculum, and pick it up 6 - 12 months later. Lo and behold, he picked it up on his own and is now a voracious reader. Our problem is now getting him to go to bed because he's rifling through the latest book from the library.

So the bottom line is, homeschooling allows you to be flexible with what your kids learn, and when.

I think the concept of "un" schooling is very important, but don't be fooled into thinking that your kids know what's best for them, because... uh, they're only kids.

You wouldn't leave your kids' meal plans up to them would you?

One of the best parts of homeschooling is that your kids can stay up late reading, then sleep in (getting the 8+ hours they need) and go on with their day.

Alarm clocks are overrated.

Give them latitude, chores & rewards. Thats what life is really about.

nice propaganda piece

gotta love that title!

the main problem is .....if they don't go to school how will the NWO/goverment indoctronate them?

“We have allowed our nation to be over taxed and over regulated and overrun by bureaucrats, the founders would be ashamed of us for what we're putting up with” Ron Paul

To be honest

I don't think they want slaves to be able to read and these children grow up to be future "Cannon Fodder" protecting their masters and their kingdom. It looks like we are entering a whole new world and the past will look like ancient history. We might want to fasten our seat belts because the future looks bumpy.

But the kids in public school can't read

.

The only thing the reporter seemed concerned about was these kids weren't going to be getting up at 5 a.m. to crank up their SUV to go sit in traffic to go work for the man.

The reporter was asking about what "jobs" they'll be able to get.

WHAT JOBS !?!?!?!

The jobs will all be in China and Mexico by then.

The only jobs in the U.S. will be Homeland Security and prison guards.

I agree with you

actually the family in the video those kids will be able to handle a collapse because they are learning to be off the grid and how to think and take care of themselves.
Unfortunately, when they grow up the rest of the population will shun them and think they are weird because they are independent thinkers.

even worse...they will know TRUE history.

we've had this exact conversation after the first time we watched the film The Money Masters. We realized our kids will have a completely different version of reality. How are they going to cope? Luckily we are in a pretty supportive and open minded homeschool community. But even if we weren't I'd rather they know what's up than just drink the cool-aid in order to fit in.
