The moment I liked best

Was when Dr. Paul quietly interjected, "So would you do away with it." And McCain just slightly raised his voice and looked away from Dr. Paul and kept talking as fast as he could about all the help he would call upon so Dr. Paul could not, or would not tie him down---because he did not know how to answer that. He didn't know what it was, whether it should come or go.

If you didn't get how funny it was

If you didn't get how funny it was, it's totally okay. It's not how he answered (although that was funny by itself), but it was actually what he said. But, you have to be familiar with financial markets and all the talks about so called PPT (Plunge Protection Team) and market manipulations that is really a BIG issue among people who closely follow financial markets. And trust me, it is a HUGE issue among so called investor class.

This video perhaps gives you some insights, but I guess you need to know the big concerns and emotions with regards to this issue to really get the stupidity of his answer. The damage has been done. He's finished as far as I can see.

Paul is the one for the economy

Amongst other things, Ron Paul is certainly the one for the long-term success of our economy, our nation as we once knew it really:

Senator McCain: Did he answer Dr. Paul's question?

I really enjoyed listening to Senator McCain's evasive non-answer!
His lack of referencing any phrases or keywords clearly indicated that the senator had no clue as to what Dr. Paul asked.

Florida 1/24/08

That was not a debate. The proper name for the 90 minute MSNBC airing was really the Mitt Romney Show.

Yep It's True

That's actually where the video on my blog is streaming from. I put it in there cause it skips the ad, and the page (not the video) should load faster. Though I should have put it in a video player that allows full screen. Anyway, those who want the actual flv file to download:

Enjoy.

Dr. Paul's Question to McCain on Economy -- maybe next time

I saw that McCain didn't give a direct answer to the question. He dodged the question by mentioning the names of people that he'd surround himself with for advice, etc. How many people noticed this I don't know. I haven't seen any media article saying that McCain was tripped up by the question or even state that Dr. Paul even made the question.

I assume the question was meant to "unmask" McCain's lack of knowledge on economic matters. I initially thought this was a "trick question" to make McCain answer a ficticious scenario and then Dr. Paul would literally say "caught you"!

Now knowing that this was a legitimate question I thought Dr. Paul should have put him on the spot and told him "you haven't answered my question, the American people want to know your answer".

Today I heard on the news that part of the debate rules was that they wanted it to be "civil" and didn't want anyone going after another candidate. So I wonder, could Dr. Paul have insisted that his question be answered or would the commentators stopped him?

Maybe next time, Dr. Paul won't let them dodge his questions!

(when Huckabee and Guliani drop out Dr. Paul's minutes will increase and his message will be heard especially when the economy gets worse, some predict the stock market will drop to 10,000, the mortgage meltdown will continue with a vengance once people with"option arm" mortgage loans start going into foreclosure, there are thousands of these loans out there).

McIDIOT

Is this guy for real? I had a great laugh. The funniest thing that I've seen in a while. LOL!

The best question from RP to

The best question from RP to McCain would be:
Why you think John, I get most donations than any other candidate on the podium, from military personel and veterans?
It would be very strong showing of support and it would be eye opener to many viewers.

You know...

...just Dr Ron Paul's presence in this election cycle gives me hope for this country's future and this most recent debate seals the deal.

I hope that by Super Tuesday I can have my donations maxed for him. I want him in this to the end to keep pounding out this message and educating the rest of the Republican party and the American public.

Look at the rapt attention the other candidates pay to him... Especially on the third party question. Dr Paul is really getting through to a lot of Americans. Dr Paul's speeches in these debates make me proud to support the United States of America where it is still possible for this type of dissenting but rational debate to sway public and government opinion.

I feel like I could go on all day repeating the same thing in different ways, but I won't. This debate was absolutely fantastic a very nice change of pace by Dr Paul. It was like an olive branch of welcome showing the rest of hte candidates where this country needs to change course.

I dont think the question is bad..

McCain would have been expecting a simpler question on something like the fed and probably had some snappy flashy replies waiting. When Ron asked the question McCain's answer was akin to Ralph Cramdon's "Hamina Hamina Hamina" and he looked uninformed of how the current government is structured no less informed on issues of economy.

Well I would staff those positions with my friends that are smarter then me and go by their advice...

People know the current government is bloated and complicated so Ron's knowing and McCain's not knowing only made Ron look more like the man for the job on the issue of the economy. This was the plan and the idea.

Weaken the leader, hopefully gain a bit yourself and let no one run away with super Tuesday.

The idea was good but the question was bad

Everyone knows, including McCain himself, that this warmonger is no economist. I wish Paul would have asked McCain a better question such as, "What's your current feeling on the federal reserve and would you leave them as a private entity or favor reforming the fed in some way?"

This way you get people interested in researching the federal reserve, you embaress McCain still and you don't get a straight answer in the end. Everyone knows the Fed but few know the financial working group (or the PPT - Plunge Protection Team)

Did Ron Paul Actually win Louisiana?

Please read this article and spread the word!

That is a good article, glad someone in OM covered it

You should post on main forum topic thread for everyone to read. The RP campaign has to do something about this. They should be irate and make some noise somewhere about it. I know it is tough though with OM blackout. I wish Kent Snyder would get interviewed, like all the other campaign managers I see everyday on OM.

Suggestions

A lot of people want to put in their 2cents worth about how he should answer questions and otherwise conduct his campaign. And naturally everyone is convinced that their ideas would be the ultimate bomb. Is there any way to submit ideas to the campaign headquarters and have them actually read?

Good question bonnie...

There needs to be a way to vote on the best ideas questions ,strategies, commercials, debate coaching,etc...and get the best of all of them into RP's hands.
He has no help in this area and it is getting more painfully obvious ,every day...
Kent Snyder looks like Ron Paul's shadow. every time I see him on camera. What did RP hire him for? to open the car door for him? Seriously. If I did not know who he was I would think he was the limo/mini van driver...
Every time I see this guy he should have a cell phone up to his head, calling out the plays, barking orders,DOING SOMETHING!!
KS just does not have the experience to run a campaign of this magnitude, especially for 30 grand a month....flame away...

This was not a good debate, However

I don't think anyone advanced their campaigns on this debate however it may have hurt McCain. He obviously is lost when it comes to economics and lied about the quote he made -- see the Think Progress Article:

http://thinkprogress.org/...

So McCain was the loser of the night.

Paul was good but seemed frustrated by the lack of air time. You could see him anticipating the moderator to call on him next and he'd go back to Romney for another question. It was ridiculous to see him being excluded from joining the discussions.

IMO the ABC Debate was Paul's shining moment so far in the debates. He was just angry enough to hammer home his conviction on the issues and was allowed enough time to challenge the views of the other candidates. LAst night was tough for him -- When you're given 6 minutes out of 1 1/2 hours you don't have much time to counter the opposition.

Needless to say Paul's message is always powerful because he's RIGHT! He is right about the war and if anything positive came out of the mostly tedious debate last night it was that Dr. Paul is 100% against this war and the other candidates are firmly for it and believe it has been worth the sacrifice. This certainly keeps him distinguished and above the rest of the field.

I'm at the point thought where I almost wish that Dr. Paul would address the blatant censorship he has been facing and make it a talking point. GE owns MSNBC and is a chief defense contractor who profits from this war and that it is not in their best self-interest to allow a message like his be heard. He should take on the MSM and the total B.S. that he has faced in his campaign -- I think people are ready to hear that and I don't think it will isolate him.

Ron Paul On Social Security

I posted the following comment at the YouTube site. I'd like to see if the more serious here agree with me.

Ron is not correct when he says that young people will not get anything from Social Security. It's a pay as you go transfer program from workers to retirees. As long as there are workers, retirees will get something. However, young workers today should not expect to get back what previous generations got from Social Security unless taxes are raised on their children and grandchildren.

Only partially

One of the biggest problems with Social Security is that is relies on a few too many things to actually work properly, but its biggest flaws are how it attains/distributes money, and how it is managed.

The biggest problem is that the current working generation is supporting the old working generation. It's a nice social gesture, but in practice it assumes way too much:

1) The current generation is going to create enough money in order to support people other than themselves.
2) There will be enough workers in the next generation to continue to support the older generations
3) The system needs to be in a constant state of surplus in order to sustain the cyclic economic downturns
4) The next generation of politicians won't touch the social security funds

1 & 2 collapse if the economy hits a prolonged recession (something the folks here are concerned about).

3 comes about because SS is a constant payout system - and if it doesn't have enough money, it needs to cover it, otherwise there is going to be serious political fallout.

Point 4 is interesting, because Social Security had a huge surplus for a while - which was by design. But, politicians being politicians, couldn't help but spend that money.

Ultimately, unless SS starts its cycle of surpluses again, it's going to be a system of seriously diminishing returns.

for what it's worth...

My understanding is that between Social Security and Medicare our country has a total of $50-$60 trillion in unfunded liabilities (current dollars). Although the current system calls for today's young people to receive benefits, under the current system it is highly unlikely there will be anything left to pay them once their retirement age comes around. Remember, the current total of unfunded liabilities includes anticipated taxes on wages of future wage earners. In order for young people to get even a nickel of Social Security benefits it would require either massive tax increases (I'd say $50 trillion would qualify as a massive increase) or severe reductions in benefits TODAY (not 10 or 20 years from now).

I just watched the clips

I gotta tell ya Ron Paul looked and sounded great except for his question to McCain. What sickens me about this is that obviously these candidates knew what the format would be. So Ron Paul had ample opportunity to come up with a question that the american people, and even his supporters could understand!

I'm a equities trader, a moderate republican, and even "I" had no clue as to what advisory group Ron Paul was refering to. And what's bad about that is that it sounds like Ron is refering to some secret economic "group" who consults with the President. I still haven't a clue who this group is.

Anyway, this is just another reason I dislike whoever is running Ron's campaign. Kent or Lew must have known what Ron wanted to ask, and they approved his question? Ron needs someone MAINSTREAM REPUBLICAN to guide him in his questions and attacks and responses.
Ron can't just go after the 10% new republicans out there...and add a few moderate republican converts like myself...he needs to expand his support base of CURRENT republicans. Ones who haven't just newly registered only to support Ron Paul. Ron talks about a big tent...well he needs to realize who takes up 90% of that tent right now if he wishes to win the nomination.
Take the war, for instance. If Ron Paul simply said IF the congress declared the war on Iraq, which they didn't, I would have simply defeated their army, deposed Saddam Hussein and his cronies and then let them rebuild their country on their own. The Bush camp went too far with nation building. A position like that would win many more traditional republicans to his camp. This way he could say..look, I was idealogically opposed to this war, however I would have carried out a declaration of war if congress so declared it. However I would have won the war and left the region and we would have had a fraction of the casualties we have today.
The problem is Ron's campaign, NOT BEING REPUBLICANS, doesn't know how to shape his answers like that so that many republicans think Ron sounds like a weak democrat.

Great Advice

This is great advice, and the campaign had better heed it now if they want to increase mainstream Republican support and have a chance at winning any states. As we all know, most firm emotive mainstream Republicans today have lost connection with the classic conservative principles that form Dr. Paul's positions. The campaign should indeed be working hard to draw some of these people in. However, it will take deep contemplation and study for them to be reconciled with the genius of the Constitution- sounds bites will not do it. Therefore, in venues like the debates where Dr. Paul's platform is being introduced to these people, he does need to reformulate his statements. He needs to emphasize the ways in which he and the mainstream Republican are alike in order to connect with them on a more superficial level so that they may be convinced to give him a more respectful consideration. Only then can we hope that they would do a little more thinking rather than responding with reactionary emotive rejection. Communication must improve in order for the superiority of Dr. Paul's ideas to be recognized by the voters. If considerable more time and resources had been invested in developing a communication strategy from the beginning of the campaign, then we would be sweeping the primaries.

With Thompson out, Tom McClintock leans to Ron Paul

"Who will respect our Constitution, defend our borders, and reduce the burdens of government on our people?" McClintock said Thursday in Sacramento as the Senate wrapped up its week. "If I were to vote today, I probably would be casting a vote for Ron Paul. I’m not voting today."

Better answers to questions about Social Security

Dr. Paul needs to hit this question HARD every time he gets it.

Just like Clinton reiterated "Its the economy stupid,"

Dr. Paul needs to CONTINUOUSLY point out the following FACTS:

Social Security Fund runs out of money in 2017.

Even worse, Medicare runs out of money in 2013.

At current spending and taxing levels, by 2040, the government will be able to do little more than afford the interest on the loans it takes to cover these programs.

The question is... how can we NOT cut government and the war?

You MUST cut government and the war.

Thanks

Wow, as for the Sun Sentinel Poll

looks like there may be a lot of undecided people out there.......that's good after Ron Paul's performance last night.

I am happy with Dr.Paul's

performance in the debate & am suprised that they let him wrap it up with the last question & positive note-

I think his press people should make a point of getting him on the air after the debate or at least make sure that they mention him.

Sun Sentinel Poll

Real Republican / Independent Run

The rebuttal at the Faux News debate to the question of "electability" was so poignant they had no choice but to censor him on the rebroadcast or expose themselves for the phonies they are. The same was true last night -- the last answer to the "Independent run" question was a shining moment for Dr. Paul. Both debates he turned this question around to point out what a true Conservative Republican use to stand for & that he was the only REAL Republican standing on that stage. Unfortunately they only asked him FOUR questions!! Although this was to be expected, it still burns me up. I hate watching these things at night because it gets me so worked up I can't go to sleep!

Dr. Paul was brilliant, although I would bet that some of the things he talked about, like the question he asked McCain, went right over most peoples heads.

Thank you for your time.

In some ways its good that

In some ways its good that the media hogs take up more time in the debates...more time for them to tear each other down, more time for them to reveal their phony, pandering, non-conservative personalities and records to the public. When Ron Paul does get his 4 questions, sure he isn't polished and glib like the ugly 4 headed hydra, but his integrity and intelligence shine through!

I love Ron Paul

You know, after watching this clip from last nights debate I truly believe that Dr.Paul gave the best answers with the time he was given.

I was surfing last night on Daily Paul wondering how the debate was going (I did not want to watch)...and by the comments by some, I got the impression that it did not go very good for Dr. Paul....but after watching it for myself I don't know why there was all this complaining and angst, b/c Dr. Paul was BRILLIANT and the CLEAR WINNER.

Paul was BRILLIANT

as usual. He made the most of the measly 5 minutes they gave him. This cheating by the old media will not be lost on the tens of millions of Americans who still have a sense of fair play. We as a people have distrusted the media since the Vietnam war and then again in the Reagan days. Confidence in OM is even worse now.
McCain looked like a deer in the headlights with the Working group question. The smirk on Ron's face as he waited for an answer was priceless. "lets see what you do with this one" The people of America are getting an education on subjects that they never even knew existed.
All that the pathetic McCain could do was name drop and dance his little issue dodge jig.
The Dr.s last statement "was" a Paul version of grabbing the GOP by the lapels and slamming them up against the wall. "Do you want to win in November"?
Bravo Dr. Paul! Bravisimo!

My only criticism of Paul's

My only criticism of Paul's question was I wish he had been more forceful when he interjected "so you would get rid of the working group?". McCain just ignored him and evaded it because Dr. Paul was not loud and insistent enough with the follow up question.

Plunge group

Our man is a genius. Did you see the look on McCain's face when he thought he was going to get a question on the war and then Dr. Paul hit him with a question on the presidents working group on the markets... Priceless. McCain is a confuses old man who has no idea that this group is manipulating the markets with our tax dollars. Does anyone know how to track how many hits the plunge group gets after this debate??? Every time Dr. Paul speaks we all get smarter!!!

McCain looked like a deer

McCain looked like a deer caught in the headlights

No, it wasn't really a blank

No, it wasn't really a blank stare. Ever been called upon in class and know you aren't prepared? Ever give a silly grin to your friends to maintain some level of cool even though you know you're cooked? That was it. It was one of those, "Oh crap, I knew it. I just KNEW IT!" kind of grins.

Ron Pauls Question

OK I watched it twice. I was at work so only half an ear I will watch more carefully tommorrow.

SO I am a pretty smart fellow but Ron Pauls question was a zinger over my head and McCains answer was also a zinger though it crossed me as everything BUT an actual answer.

Can someone Deconstruts Reduce and Parse both Ron Paul's Questions AND McCain's Answers?

It sounded like RP was asking about some kind of group or committee ? What is it? Whats it for? Why? Relevance? complete break down for us n on political folks would be really nice.

Thanks!

Paul's Question to McCain

The President's Working Group on Financial Markets is more popularly known as the Plunge Protection Team. It is suspected that it intervenes directly in the stock market by buying stocks or futures when the market goes down. Of course it would do this with the funny money that only the Federal Reserve gets to create. The truth is that no one outside the inner circle really knows what the Working Group on Financial Markets does, hence Paul's question about greater openness and transparency.

Needless to say this question went over the head of McCain and 99% of the listening public. Too bad. Paul is too smart for this country.

DANGER Ron Paul Danger

VERY dangerous thing happened tonight. I think Ron Paul handled it as well as is possible.

I am imagining that once they crush us from the republican nomination of Citizen support is still strong he will go Independent. Republican Independent but independent nonetheless what else can he do drop out?

Note the LAST question they asked him. They are trying to PREEMPTIVELY sabotage an alternative run. They are trying to back him into a corner now to make it harder later.

THIS is one of the reasons they KEEP asking him this over and over again.

Once again almost NO screen time virtually ZERO time in the after debate discussion.

early on they noted so far in the txt poles he was 40% romney 41%

MANY MANY times they keep mentioning that further poll results are coming but NEVER mention them. I watched it twice (to make sure there was no re air editing like on FOX I do not think anything was removed)

Note they NEVER actually came back with the poll results ? well thats pretty easy to guess why. The WWW results after 25,000 submissions had Ron Paul at 60% for all 3 of the positive question and near ZERO for the negative answers. ONLY ROMNEY got out of the SINGLE DIGITS

But off course non of this was mentioned. Curious but expected.

I know he is going to get slaughtered in Florida but I REALLY hope he can pull a rabbit out of this one IE 15% of higher would go a long way!!

I hope content matters to voters

Despite the additional time McCain had I think he did an extremely poor job.

If you come out as a senile moron the time will actually hurt you. ;-)

Poor McCain!

Was anyone else offended by the smirk on McCain's face when Ron stated he wished to ask McCain a question? McCain's face appeared as if to say "oh boy, lucky me, the crank is asking me a question, this ought to be good!"

But then, after Ron asked his question, McCain's smug look turned to one of "Oh s---, what the hell is this guy asking me...." It's almost as though I could see the crusty gears in his head trying to turn, trying to come up with something intelligible. Of course, he couldn't! :-)
