Pretty fair for the MSM, even if the photographer did try to make Ron look like an undertaker, and the overall tone was "look how bad the Republicrats have screwed up; thanks to them those loony libertarians like Ron Paul have half a chance! Hillary/Giuliani are going to throw the election to Paul and all our women will end up as prostitutes!" Still, we're just not going to do much better from the MSM; sex sells in news media, and if it bleeds, it leads. The more provocative the media spin, the better, at least in terms of ratings/reads/page hits. I think we Paulites are just going to have to accept the MSM as it is and move on--hopefully by offering more honest, intelligent and reasoned information than they do, such as here and elsewhere on the internet.

For one thing, the lazy "journalist" recycled the "isolationist" smear. Maybe I'm just annoyed at Newsweak for lying about e-gold, though. I've certainly seen their biased agenda firsthand in the past...Anyway, they also seem to imply that we're going for some 20% total in NH at the end. I was under the impression we plan to WIN in NH, regardless of Newsweak "journalists'" amateur prognostications.

the Newsweek piece is not even original. there is a NY Times article from 1996 that covers one of Paul's Congressional runs.
his opponent and men connected to the Bush camp conducted a smear campaign against Paul. they hired some telemarketers to conduct polls. if a person responded favorably about Ron Paul they were told he wants to legalize drugs and prostitution. it worked out later for Ron Paul, though; he sent videos of his endorsement from Reagan. by the time the enemy found out, it was too late to launch another offensive.
this guy Fineman obviously dislikes Ron Paul. the neocon Republicans are worried about the New Hampshire primaries. Rudy Giuliani is putting in appearances and switched to a Red Sox fan. a lot hinges on this primary's outcome, as you all know.
I am optimistic about Ron Paul's chances after reading an earlier bit in the Washington Post about the young man running Paul's campaign there. it was very flattering and portrayed Ron Paul and his supporters as idealistic.
I think this about as good an article as you are going to get from a main stream media person.
The positive aspect is that RP is getting EXPOSURE. This is good! At least they are not ignoring him. I see a common theme lately in the MSM that RP is an underdog. We all know that Americans love, and pull for, an underdog.
Instead of whining and firing off nasty emails to every author that does not totally praise RP, go tell 10 people today about Ron Paul.
We have discovered that there is Hope For America. Share the message.
With the wide variety of Dr Pauls views, which can be considered quite controversial and apart from the norm until researched further you are not going to see much better coverage than this.
It is idiotic to propose e-mailing snarky comments to a national coliumnist about it. That is about the worst thing you can do. All it can do is convince them that all Ron Paul supporters are unable to accept anything less than either a press release from the campaign or internet backslaps among each other.
If you are seriously for RonPaul4President you have to realize that it is ALL about exposure. People have to hear the name, be intrigued by an idea or two and look for more. To spend your time complaining about a few innacurate points in an otherwise positive article is seriously damaging.
Stay positive, keep moving forward and don't pay attention to the detractors, Dr Paul doesn't seem to, why would we?
Joe
I don't agree with that opinion. After MSNBC pulled the poll showing Ron Paul winning the TV debate by 41% + ....I saw them go from thinking we were a small little internet community who was powerless, ...to a super strong, vocal and NUMEROUS majority.
Look, when Hollywood wants to promote a movie, the best thing it can do is get a dozen positive responses out there to the others in the first week. Then second week will take care of itself.
This race to the primaries, its much the same. Like movies we need good press, lots of good press. We cannot afford to be slapped around, not for a second. We must challenge it immediately. Once bad Story Line is started, its hard as heck to stop.
Currently we face these two Bad Story Lines:
1) "You are low in the polls, how do you explain that?"
2) "If you don't get the nomination, who will you support?"
Thats it. AND DON'T TAKE THIS LIGHTLY. Its powerful stuff.
To answer that we must say in our own way the following:
1) "Yes polls that survey 500 people, we feel, are really just name recognition polls. But those who are actively paying attention during the pre-primary season are supporting Ron Paul in high percentages. By any measure, Ron Paul has won over 30 nationwide Straw Polls and 5 Television debates. Its early still, but we are now getting the word out now to the general voter."
2) "If I don't get the nomination? Well a lot of things can change between now and 2008. Remember what happened to Gary Heart? Also we are about to go into a recession and I am the only candidate on either side who can get us out of it fast. I could easily get the nomination and so I would not be surprised if some of them start to copy my message of freedom and following the Constitution, States Rights, lower taxes, and smaller government."
If you think this was being "slapped around" you have not seen anything yet. Grow faster than the opposition can attack.
Get exposure (almost any), cause an interest, educate, repeat, repeat, repeat.
The worst thing that could happen is for them to ignore Dr Paul, you seriously can't expect it all to be 100% pro. Be thankful for the mentions and that their millions of viewers, readers or listeners had a chance to hear something out of the ordinary.
Take advantage of every opportunity and go on to the next.
Joe
Newsweek is only discrediting THEMSELVES, not Dr. Paul, with this article. The attempts to shove their hatred of Dr. Paul down the people's throat is offensive and wildly desperate. The ridiculous attack on Dr. Paul as an isolationist is a myth I love seeing Dr. Paul bust (like in the latest MSNBC interview). Bush is the Isolationist folks...
I believe that an objective reader would ask himself the author despises Dr. Paul.
I agree with the poster who said that this article was written very lazily with absolutely NO INSIGHT into what is really happening in America right now. Hell if I trust Newsweek I'd actually believe that McCain has a better shot than Paul at the nomination, what a bunch of propaganda NONSENSE!
"All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent."

That was NOT a great article. First Fineman says, "Whatever Hollywood says a presidential candidate is supposed to look like, Ron Paul isn't it." Notice that it is not Hollywood who says what a presidential candidate "should look like", it is news magazines and "journalists" like Fineman who are in the business of "saying". So that was an underhanded way of saying Ron Paul is not Presidential, he is a retired mall-walking great grandpa. Thats a cheap rhetorical trick. Fineman goes on and takes a few more wild sucker punches against Dr. Paul. Here, "He not only wants U.S. troops home from Iraq, he wants them home from the rest of the PLANET." and here, "Much of the world dismisses Paul as a libertarian crank." First, whats so amazing about withdrawing from the "planet"? He does not explain Dr. Paul's reasons, just emphasizes "planet" as if that is argument enough. Second, when and where did he survey the "world" and when did "they" call him a "crank". And just what is a crank? The only poll I know of that surveys the "world" on who they want for the President of the USA, Ron Paul wins hands down.
Certainly Fineman throws the mud, does not explain and so disrespects his readers. He is no journalist. For the rest of the article he likes to do the lazy job of horse-race speculation--more punditry.
So if he is not a journalist, he is a pundit. Why not say so and why not just come out with who he supports? Why does nerdy little Fineman have to hide behind the "journalist" label? Is he still afraid of someone sticking him into a sixth grade locker somewhere? Is that why he is such a suck-up to power? Has little Fineman been forever traumatized by the events of sixth grade?
I suggest YOU ALL email Fineman, everyone. I suggest you tell him off, call him out, and demand he either "come out of the closet" as a pundit for some particular candidate, or, be a REAL journalist and INFORM his readers why it is that Dr. Paul takes these positions. Certainly you have my blessing to tell Fineman he is a little punk, the kind of kid who gets his lunch money taken from him, and now grows up to become the biggest SUCK-UP to power, both corporate and government, the world has ever seen. Ok, just tell him he disrespected his Newsweek readers with such biased and uninformative remarks.
Tell Fineman that he has clearly been a uncritical journalist, who is guilty as hell for promoting the Iraq war. Further, tell him he is uncritical of himself and his own Pro-Attack Iraq magazine for FAILING to do real investigative journalism and tell the American public there was NO WMD's. Knight Ridder News had the story right, thus Fineman and Newsweek have no excuses. Tell him he owes the American Public a HUGE apology for simply being a Mouth Piece of White House War Propaganda. Tell him that since he and his magazine has failed to appologize for its part in the Iraq debacle, its really shameful for them to criticize the one and only Congressman WHO GOT IT RIGHT. If Fineman believes that Dr. Paul's policy positions are wrong, then state it honestly for the record, don't ingage in the underhanded practice of trying to guide your readers opinions. With a track record as bad as Newsweek's on Iraq, Dr. Pauls policy positions should be regarded with a lot more respect, humility and curiosity. Dr. Paul when he is the ONLY anti-war candidate running. Tell Fineman he would be more honest and respectful if would openly state he is pro-israel and perceives that Dr. Paul's positions would harm Israel. Tell him that is the least he can do since we have given up waiting for some REAL true investigative journalism to find out who terrorized Congress with Anthrax. Ask him, "is it too much to ask to just explain the Doctors policy reasons without smearing him?" When doing an article on Ron Paul, he could at least explain the reason that Dr. Paul has for the various positions he takes. To state them with intent to smear is punditry, not journalism. Is Journalism too much to ask from Newsweek?
Treg...Although I did not take it quite so far as you might have done, here is the email that I sent to Newsweek.
To whom it may concern:
I cannot believe that, of all the photos that are recently available, including one of Dr. Paul holding a little girl, you select a photo that catches Dr. Paul in one of the most unbecoming poses imaginable. We have all had such photos taken. Why print such?!!! Lazy? Insensitive? Or deliberate? This is really unconscionable and appears to be an attempt to subtly manipulate opinion which I disrespect entirely.
Fineman does Dr. Paul further injustice by more subtle manipulation of the viewer's thinking, tossing out ideas that are ostensibly designed to make Dr. Paul appear quirky and on the fringe of society. There is no attempt to present his reasoning. He is simply presented as advocating legalizing prostitution and drugs. Where did the prostitution bit come from? Why not talk about Paul's basic premise that the federal government has no Constitutional business or authority to regulate the personal lives of individuals in any capacity, be it sex or drug use or whatever, if they are not infringing the liberty of other citizens.
Prohibition did not work, and it even was carried out Constitutionally via a Constitutional Amendment which later was repealed. Where was the Constitutional Amendment for outlawing drugs. We are in the same situation now as with alcohol. Prohibition works only for drug lords and gangsters. Why not point this out in your report? Why not attempt to explain the reasoning behind Paul's positions which is clearly available for anyone to read. Laziness again? Or, deliberate?
Fineman's recycling of the "isolationist" smear is infuriating!!! He cannot be so stupid that he does not understand the distinction between being an isolationist and being a "non-interventionist." There is a clear distinction, believe it or not. It is one that Paul has made over and over ad nauseam, because people like Fineman keep writing and asking about it. In fact, Paul has pointed out that current foreign policy has made the USA, practically speaking, isolationists. We are cut off from the rest of the world, because the world in general detests our imperial hubris. Are your purported journalists this oblivious to the world in which they live and about which they are entrusted to report to the public? If so, then I say fire them and get people who will act like true journalists and give people information allowing them to make up their own minds. It has been so long since I have read the report of a true journalist. We are beset now with opinion writers who cloak their words in purported journalistic facts.
Does this article represent a deliberate attempt to marginalize Dr. Paul and the growing force behind him that threatens the status quo? In short, is it disingenuous editorial policy or just inept journalism? Either way, Newsweek stands indicted. Why should anyone in the future trust your publication? Why should you ever be read by anyone who values truth in reporting and journalistic integrity? I cannot find any acceptable answers except that they should not, unless you folks either wake up or, more likely, stop pretending that "We the People" cannot see what is going on.
As Ron Paul is becoming highly visible in NH, because of all the supporter's street signs and banners, it seems that Newsweek is trying to make a pre-emptive negative perception for Ron.
Their goal seems to be preventing public from Googling Ron Paul or visiting his website and educating themselves about Ron, which ends up making them become Paul supporters in the most of cases .
They consistently try to frame the guy as a kook. Look at the picture they use, it is very foreboding and not a flattering picture at all. I am sure they had a lot of good pictures to use that would highlight him smiling or interacting with people. They try to make him a fringe candidate. These mainstream media people have their heads so far up their arses it really is amazing to me. I knew statism was bad, but I never knew how deeply it had affected our population until I became more involved with this campaign. UGLY.
The "mainstream" news media will HATE that pic posted here the other day where he's lifted-up the cute, smiling, little girl in Orlando. No way we'll ever see THAT one unless it's in a paid ad of some sort...The thing is, photo-selection bias, while obvious, can be hard to objectively-bust. But we all know we've seen it when we see him with that kid and then see some of the horse doo-doo the news media shovels at us.

I also agree with the former comment - there's no way the photo they used was the best one they had. They deliberately chose that one to send a (not so) subtle message that there's something not quite right about RP.
He wants to ... decriminalize prostitution and call an end to the drug war.
I'm pretty sure I've never heard RP make the decriminalization of prostitution a big priority of his campaign. Why not say things like.. he wants to decriminalize human action that violates no one's rights? That would cover a whole slew of issues.
But they point out things like this to make him sound fringe and wacky so people think things like "oh my god, he thinks women should be prostitutes! " or "He thinks it's ok to smoke crack!". Which isn't true (I'm guessing), but that's the reaction they want to give, as if free will is criminal.
As a constitutionalist, RP would get the Feds out of the drug war and limit their involvement to prosecuting the only federal crimes mentioned in the Constitution: treason, counterfeiting, and piracy. Which, as Harry Browne was fond of pointing out, are crimes primarily committed by federal employees.
Victimless crime laws would then be up to the states, individually. Although RP would be in moral or utilitarian opposition to such laws, I don't think he would favor intervening to stop states from implementing them.
This is exactly what needs to be the response to nearly all criticisms of Dr. Paul's policies. How do we get this down to a sound bite so those in the TV generations (myself included) can digest?
the best we'll get from the MSM
Pretty fair for the MSM, even if the photographer did try to make Ron look like an undertaker, and the overall tone was "look how bad the Republicrats have screwed up; thanks to them those loony libertarians like Ron Paul have half a chance! Watch his Google video...
Watch his Google video... when asked he said that it's been around for a long time and no one's had much luck in eliminating it.
Of course as a libertarian he feels that the actions of two consenting adults is none of the government's business. It is absolutely a state's issue.
on prostitution
Ron Paul said during the Google interview that he wouldn't have federal prostitution police, does that sound fringe to you?

As a constitutionalist, RP would get the Feds out of the drug war and limit their involvement to prosecuting the only federal crimes mentioned in the Constitution: treason, counterfeiting, and piracy. Which, as Harry Browne was fond of pointing out, are crimes primarily committed by federal employees.
Victimless crime laws would then be up to the states, individually. Although RP would be in moral or utilitarian opposition to such laws, I don't think he would favor intervening to stop states from implementing them.
