the 7 words which would fix the whole fiasco are...
"Just kidding, folks. Here's the real ad!"
Barring that most blessed of miraculous reliefs occurring....
I would like to make an attempt to bridge the yawning chasm between the grassroots pitchfork wielders and the defensive campaign staff. I've read a lot of the comments on both sides and I think I "get" where everybody's coming from.
As one of the many who were shocked and outraged by the *HORRIBLE* "quality" of this ad, I think I can speak for that group fairly well. I don't know what the campaign side of this is -- and that is actually the heart of the problem.
They have given us a lot of good signals lately. Yeah, there were the drearily forgettable Iowa TV ads, but it was still kind of early and we brushed those off and moved along. Since then, most of what we've seen has been encouraging. The web site has been improved (though it could still be improved a lot more). The flash widgets excited us all and broke new ground in multiple ways. The recently unveiled radio ad is at least OK. All the great YouTube vids just keep coming! The new 12-page paper mailer looks very good (at least the small pics I've seen of the pages). And there's all that CA$H! We were told $1M was being spent on TV ads for NH. Wow!!
So, with all of those indicators looking solid, I was feeling confident that the TV ads were going to be good. After all, the campaign had no need to go with bad quality ads; if they couldn't come up with anything, they could have simply posted a notice on ronpaul2008.com saying "We will start running TV ads as soon as we have good 30 second vids in TV quality" and then sat back and watched their desks disappear under a mountain of TOTALLY FREE videos sent in by eager video producers... and every last one would have been better than this groaner.
With all of that context... we got this dumped on our unsuspecting heads. My reaction was essentially the same as if HQ had suddenly emptied a bedpan onto me from the 3rd floor with no warning.
Then, to make things worse, when we, the many in the RPR, who have *poured* our souls into this campaign for 6 months, began to complain about the awful smell, the campaign's response is that we should shut up and that we're harming the campaign by complaining.
This is absurd.
Contrast it to the fundraising data flow which has been daringly opened up to us. Now we have a loop: we donate and the results are fed back to us instantly. Yes! And we can see all the others donating, too. Yes!! So, that is an example of doing communication between the masses and HQ the *right* way. This ad is an example of just the opposite.
I don't demand to micro-manage the campaign. I wouldn't know how anyway. But I do expect some decency and to be treated as what I think I am: a partner, of some sort, in this effort. Sure, the campaign should keep some of its cards close to the vest, as needed. But that doesn't preclude some communication, and in particular, it doesn't preclude a heads-up if the campaign is about to drop a log in our punch bowl.
What I need to know, in order to "just trust" the HQ, is that they *know* the ad is atrociously bad. I need to know they realize that, and are -- for whatever mysterious strategic reason -- OK with that. I require that knowledge, because if they think that is a *good* ad, then I do have a problem on my hands; I can't in good conscience ask anyone to give money to put more stuff like *that* on TV, and I'm going to be demoralized thinking about more bad ads being made and funded with our efforts.
So, please, HQ, put this right. Either bring out the real ad or give us a reason to have confidence in your judgement. And no, the 10 previous election wins don't suffice. This ad is *that* bad, at least in comparison to what else we're used to seeing, daily, for FREE on YouTube. Reagan said "trust, but verify" and I think he had a good point there. I need some verification that you are sane (and also not infiltrated). Give me that and I can get back to work confidently. Without it, starting in the morning, I'll have to force myself to go through the motions, and that hurts. I've never had to do that before.
If you need help creating good ads, just say so.
If you meant, mysteriously, to make a bad ad, just say so.

Good God! I cant believe
Good God! I cant believe how upset some of you get over a bad TV Ad. Now i am can see the biggest weakness in Ron's Campaign is some of the wackjobs that it seems to be attracting. So what, its just one TV ad, if some of you are this easily disheartened, then you will never last through the whole campaign. I will warn you now, Ron Paul is probably going to do 100 more things in his road to the white house that you dont agree with too. So if you cant stand 1 bad tv ad, then i guess hes not the guy for you. But as for the rest of us, i think its not a big deal, i am not losing heart over one bad tv commercial.
Politicians like Ron Paul dont just drop out of the sky. He is the first honest guy in politics ive ever seen in my life. I could care less if there was a bad tv ad that he endorsed. So what?! Just cuz you donated some money to his campaign, it doesnt mean you run it. If you dont trust him, then dont donate anymore. Keep it yourself and run your own ads, no one is stopping you.
I was shocked when i read some responses to his first ad on youtube, where some guys said they were literally not going to support him anymore, because of this one ad. I cant believe it, but in my opinion we are better off without those kind of people. What do they call those types? Fair weather types i suppose.
"Its time for a new Revolution! Ron Paul 2008"
NAH, LET THE STEAM OUT.... THE NEW AD IS UP...
dont get upset - let the people vent - its all gonna die down now BECAUSE THE NEW VIDEO IS UP AND IT ROCKS.....
I too was disappoint with Video number one and it just scared alot of people that this was the best we would get for our money... number two has re-confirmed idiots are not totally running the campaign... but let people vent and dont get upset... again its a free country and they have a right to disagree even with Ron Paul....
and the first video did suck...
A bunch of whiners. Waaaaa!!
COULD WE PLEASE GET OVER THE AD THING PEOPLE !?
It's alarming how many whiners and complainers I see on Ron Paul threads.
If you don't have something good to say keep it to yourself. We've got the wind at our backs, his numbers are growing, the ads are fine and he is going to win. GEEZ!!
Here's some people in New York speaking from their heart..
The idea behind the ad is great, but unrehearsed remarks such as seen on this video speak volumes:
http://www.youtube.com/wa...
Everyone who's saying calm down...
SHUT the heck up! This is horrible! and trying to justify this ad in your own head is not going to help! I'm seriously considering the possibility that the campaign has been infiltrated...
really now...
lol I love how most of the negative comments are from people that just registered after the add was released.... infiltrated please who do you think you are kidding?
Yes, please calm down
I agree the ad is bad. I don't think they have been "infiltrated".
I'm not trying to justify the ad.
But telling people to "shut [...] up" is not productive.
I think mistakes were made. Let's try to give advice on how to correct
them.
1> The radio ad was OK. Good job.
2> Pre screening future ads in the on-line community is good.
3> There have been several productive suggestions on how to make
*this* particular ad better. Can those be done before releasing it?
4> Just use one of the ads produced by that independent organization,
Operation NH was it?
5> open up a contest to produce a 30 second ad.
But yelling is not helpful. Even if you are right all it does is make the
person receiving the yell defensive. And we *really* don't want
people in the campaign "fighting back".
your response was the best so far
Your response was the most helpful and constructive. I hope the campaign sees it.
As for Huckabee/Mitt bloggers, forget it: I'm a RP meetup organizer (#416) since June, I heard about the ad being awful from a friend who's a RP meetup organizer of even longer stint (#360), and she directed me to a letter written to HQ about its awfulness which was authored by still another RP meetup organizer. We are the base. We are not saboteurs. The ad simply sucks. The question needing answering is *WHY* does it suck? It's either intentional or unintentional. We just need to know, and to be treated with some level of respect instead of like mushrooms. That is not asking too much.
Notice that there's been no outrage over the other campaign efforts, *only* this ad.
As a final refutation, HERE'S THE NEW AD (#2) which is FINE! Yay!!! Now, why did they ever put out that terrible first one when this second one is fine??

Get active NOW to put Ron in the general election. ronpaul.meetup.com
Please, Please Please don't do this!!!!
Please don't do this. I'm begging you all not to sow discord. The complaints have been addressed. They know that some of us are unhappy with the result.
I personally don't know what it takes to make a good ad, or what they want out of it. If they told us what they needed, like they put up a Ron Paul commercial youtube contest on the website and said what it should be about, that would rock.
There are times that could be accomplished, and then there are times that we just can't be told the strategy. It gives too much away to those who aren't playing in the open.
But we can't let Politics interfere with Paulitics. I think it's possible they were trying to do this really on the cheap, like most of the rest of the campaign, and it didn't look as nice as we'd have liked. But as of the day it was put out, that was the best there was. I'm calling on Ron Paul supporters to answer the Adam Curry challenge, and make a better campaign commercial.
I agree completely; pull the
I agree completely; pull the ad, or give us a very, very good reason why you shouldn't.
"If we make a mistake, we go out and correct it" (Ron Paul quote about the war in Iraq, I hope he remembers that concerning this ad)
Everyone please calm down
the ad has a lot of positives please read my reasons why its good
http://dailypaul.com/node...
sometimes i wonder if the 260 bloggers huckabee hired aren't in here stirring us all up
Good Point
You've made a good point about the Huckabee bloggers. I figure that if he has 260, Mitt must have 1500 or more.
When I saw the ad yesterday, I was disappointed. And then, I went to see TV ads that other candidates have out and realized that the ad is actually pretty good.
I think I was disappointed because I YouTube a lot.
My husband, who spends his spare time reading and doesn't watch a YouTube video unless I threaten to pull out a couple of his teeth, liked the ad when I showed it to him.
Confidence restored.
Those points are positives
only if they're executed/presented well....what you say would be relevant if the actors didn't look like robots....we already know the CONCEPT is ok on paper....that's not the point....it's the execution of the concept....and no we're not freaking huckabee supporters, we just care about the quality of the ads because it's how the rest of the country will see Dr. Paul, and things like this can make or break a campaign sometimes.....I doubt I just speak for myself when I say that when you make a cause like this your entire life, you tend to be VERY concerned about something that seems like it could potentially undo a lot of the positive work that's been done....
Those 7 words...
To be honest I am almost expecting him to say those 7 words at the Leno show as a practical joke to gain more publicity. If you look at Ron Paul's ads in the past they are much more powerful and grab better attention.
Why can't we look at this in a positive light?
This could be Ron Paul's version of Clinton saxophone playing on the Arseneo Hall Show.
What's with this Dean crap?
I say we put trust in our leader here.
Yes, it all comes together
Yes, it all comes together now! Ron Paul looks angry in the ad, because he is angry aobut the ad being so bad!
Yes! That's the Reason!
*nods head*
I'm terrified that this ad will...
be our "Howard Dean scream"
Good Point!
The official campaign needs to realize that you can't put just anything out there. You have to think about how others can use it to make fun of you.
I'm sorry to hear from other posts that the official campaign still thinks this is a good ad. I hope they come to their senses fast and pull the ad before it airs.
I needed to laugh
The way you put things made me laugh. Thank you so much. I feel much better now. I agree with you completely about needing HQ to communicate with us about the TV ads.
exactly!
I totally agree! But don't lose hope, go back to Youtube watch the "a new hope" piece and the other wonderful user made ads lets not forget the reasons we support Ron Paul. I know that he will hear us.
I will cheer for Dr. Paul today when I see him in Wyoming he is still my candidate.
Ron Paul!!!
Hire Adam Berman, the man who did the Seattle Meetup Films
I was convinced that the RP Campaign was going with Adam Berman of www.bermanfilms.com who did such a great job on that Seattle Meetup video. That video was so professionally done that even the part with the dog barking his support for Ron Paul came across as well done and memorable.
The campaign needs to ask Adam to do the whole campaign video-wise. Adam is motivated, like I am, because of Ron Paul's aversion to Internet regulation.
"Internet Regulation" has to be the main theme of Ron Paul's campaign for the next year. It will pull in the veteran's vote and the active duty military vote where talk about how vets were wasting their time in Iraq will not be helpful (although it is respected when coming from the right or middle)
The line "I don't agree with Ron Paul on everything" was brilliant in the current ad. It helps to pull in the pro-war Republicans who were with George Bush on the war and remain with George Bush on the war, but dislike the overly religious rights-grabber otherwise.
It is possible to be pro-war and admire Ron Paul for everything else he says.
It is possible to be pro-war and detest what George Bush thinks about men's rights otherwise.
Hammer home "No Regulation of the Internet" and you will see Ron Paul's numbers rise high enough to at least force Rudi Giuliani to take the same position. :-)
Hillary Clinton would never agree not to regulate the Internet, which means you can take tens of millions of Democrats away from her in the general election by discussing that.
