How do we solve the budget problem painlessly??? SPIN!!

Spin is the answer to the size of our federal government, spin it all off into the free market. This is a thought experiment, please stay with me.

By spin, I mean privatize, and immediately. Take every part of the federal government not necessary to our republic, and create a private company and sever ties as quickly as possible.

NASA, for example, should just be spun into a private company, or seperate companies, and competition should be immediately legal in the space race. What would that give us? Why, The NBC and Coca-Cola sponsored shuttle launch on channel 7, and a week later the ESPN and Clorox Bleach magnetically propelled launcher racing to land a man on Mars before the other.

It would cost the taxpayers nothing, it could be easily run and run safely because of the very liability involved in shooting people off the planet. It would be run by corporate sponsorship and by technology patents, and there would be genuine competition within The United States, and coming very shortly, inexpensive trips to space. These are things the government does not do well, but corporate America do amazingly.

Also, why maintain the Post Office, when their very existance is the reason postal delivery is not faster. FedEx, UPS, and many others would love to be able to deliver first class letters in competition of the Post Office, but legally cannot. I say spin the Post Office into a private company, and have them off our backs.

Medicare, Medicaid, must they be maintained? Why not spun off to be run as private charities. If tomorrow, there were to be no more money to Medicare, how many Americans would let the elderly of this country go without medical care? Medicare and Medicaid should be funded as private charities.

Speaking of charities, why not social security. It's the responsibility of my generation to repay my parent's generation for what was taken from them, but I would argue that it is a moral obligation, not a legal one. The government should spin SS off as private charities. News reports of trouble with people's retirement would spur Americans into action. I would have absolutely no problem continuing to pay SS taxes to a private charity, but I would do it of my own choice.

There are many other government organizations which could easily be spun off into non-profits...in fact, most of them.

What else can easily be cut back on...hmm, simply dissolve every cabinet position created since Gerald Ford left office, cut defense hugely, get rid of entitlements, and what do you have left to pay for in the federal government?

Treasury department, I'll admit I think we need. They need to control the production of money, and limit the production to fixed amounts based on financial metrics.

Department of State? yeah, totally need them to communicate and use diplomacy.

Defense, Justice, I would say we need, but any others we really need? US Trade Representative? Office Management and Budget? Anyone???

We just cut more than 2 trillion dollars in this thought experiment. The feds collected less money than that in income taxes, meaning we could eliminate it entirely. That leaves 1.2 trillion dollars in the American economy, in the hands of the people who earned it, and we'd have enough left over to not only fund the government, but begin to pay down our debt obligation. Keep on this path, we would be booming, and our country would be run well, because they would only have a few things to do right.

Call it a revolution, or a series of spin off's needed to save the republic...wouldn't this be a quick and painless path to saving ourselves?

You still don't understand

You still don't understand that the fiat monetary system does not allow for the paydown of this "national" debt. What will you pay it down with? You are under the assumption that we live in an asset/liability world, we do not, the entire system is a liability, including the "money". You cannot pay debt with debt, you can only swap old debt for new debt.

One more

One more self indulgent bump, then I will let die.

lol, Ill take the bait

I think assuming that all or many components of an gargantuan enterprise that is such a loser financially could be easily or even possibly transformed into many profitable enterprises or farmed out to unaccountable charities is a stretch.

Perhaps the failure and irresponsibility of the GSEs this weekend is an apropos example of taking a well meaning, widely popular govt program and making it even quasi-private. The temptation to privately plunder in the name of providing the american way of life to all coupled with a reluctance/inability to allow failure might be more the rule in your scenario, rather than the exception.

Perhaps we could just elect politicians that wont vote irresponsibly. If we do, im sure practical, prudent ideas along your lines may be found to be feasible.
